Legal issues
Settling in Australia can be challenging for anyone, however for someone who doesn't speak English, or has English as a second language and is from a different culture, those challenges are made even more difficult.
Trying to understand a new legal system in these circumstances is extremely difficult. Issues such as homelessness can be alleviated by an understanding of legal education and by gaining information about the legal services available. Many migrants spend the first few years of living in Australia, with a limited understanding of the laws and operation of our legal system.
If a person is experiencing violence from a partner, husband or family member, they have a right to stop it. Most family violence is committed by men against women, however it can also be committed by women against men or in same-sex relationships. If it involves assault or the threat of assault, it is a crime punishable by law. (Definition by the Legal Services Commission of SA)
