Student Profile: Rosalie O’Connor

After a 14 year career as a primary school teacher, Rosalie O’Connor felt that her life needed to take a new direction. She returned to university to pursue her PhD, but ultimately felt she needed to be doing something more practical rather than theoretical. Her interest in community services developed after volunteering for a project that worked with families experiencing domestic and family violence issues, and she looked for a way to continue that work professionally. RAVE Café Now Open for Business

What started off as a training venture has now developed into a full service café. The program was launched last year with a group of young people studying a Certificate II in Community Services Work at the Institute as part of the Relationship and Values Education (RAVE) program run through Relationships Australia SA. The café is run through the Blackwood Church of Christ every Friday, where the students prepare and serve morning tea and lunch to the local community. Continue Reading

New Qualification: Mental Health Peer Work

Starting in July 2015, the Australian Institute of Social Relations will offer a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work. Peer work is a vital role within the mental health workforce. It involves the delivery of services by workers who have a lived experience of mental illness as a consumer or carer who are living well and wish to use their lived experience to assist others towards recovery and improve service delivery.
