The CHC43515 Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work is for people who have lived experience of mental illness as either a consumer or carer and who work in mental health services that support consumer peers or carer peers. Workers are employed in the mental health sector in government, public, private or community managed services.

The training will provide students with the skills and knowledge to:

  • Apply peer work practices in the mental health sector
  • Work Legally and Ethically
  • Promoting safety
  • Work with diverse people
  • Work effectively in trauma informed care
  • Work collaboratively with the care network and other services
  • Assess and promote social, emotional and physical wellbeing

120 hours of practicum / work placement is required for the completion of this Skill Set.

Entry Requirements

Learners in this program must have a lived experience of mental health either as direct personal experience or as a carer of someone with mental health lived experience.

Employment Opportunities

Peer work, peer workers and peer workforce include all workers in mainstream or alternative mental health services or initiatives who are employed to openly identify and use their lived experience of mental distress or as a carer supporting someone with mental illness as part of their work. This program is equivalent to a minimum of 15 to 20 hours of study per week, and students will be required to undertake self-directed learning outside of classroom delivery. This program includes 120 hour student placement / work based practicum.

Face-to-face classroom sessions are delivered in Adelaide (Hindmarsh).

This program has 17 face-to-face classroom contact days. Students will be required to undertake self-directed online learning outside of classroom delivery. This program includes 120 hour student placement / work based practicum.

Work Placement Requirements

To achieve this qualification, students must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

  • All placements must be approved by the Institute prior to commencement to ensure the required work-based learning and assessment can be completed.
  • Wherever possible, a work placement within a program of Relationships Australia SA will be organised, but this is not guaranteed, and students need to seek placements at other organisations.
  • Students on placement within RASA must meet the mandatory requirements for working with children checks, National police clearance, and COVID-19 vaccinations.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL credit may be granted for relevant prior study.

Students seeking recognition for all or part of a qualification must complete the online AISR Recognition Application at least 14 days before the start of the course.

Full fee: $5,000

Participants eligible for SA Government subsidies: $1,000 (Tuition Gap Fee)

Participants eligible for SA Government subsidies with valid concession card: $500.00 (Tuition Gap Fee)
