Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) allows students to receive credit for part of a course, individual units of competence or a whole qualification. RPL is a way of acknowledging skills and knowledge previously acquired through formal, informal or non-formal learning, which means students may not need to attend classroom training or complete further assessment.
The terms of recognition include recognition of prior learning, credit transfer and articulation.
These processes recognise competence no matter how, when or where the learning occurred. For example, students may wish to apply for recognition on the basis of life and work experience, or as a result of having completed other formal or informal learning.
In order to grant recognition, an assessor must be confident that students are currently competent and meet the requirements of the endorsed competency standards within the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF). Evidence of competence may take a variety of forms and could include certification, references from past employers, testimonials from clients and work samples.
The assessor must ensure that the evidence is authentic, valid, reliable, current and sufficient. Students seeking recognition for all or part of a qualification must first complete the Recognition Application Kit.
