Make Move to Benefit Youth

When many job seekers think of working in the growing healthcare and social assistance sector, youth work is not the first job that comes to mind.

Yet it offers workers the chance to make a difference in young people’s lives that lasts well into the future. Many organisations are in need of youth workers, with an ideal qualification being the Certificate IV in Youth Work.

The Australian Institute of Social Relations (AISR), the training division of Relationships Australia South Australia, is one organisation that offers students skills development and the chance to gain experience in real work contexts.

It includes a placement with Future Youth Initiative, a youth service of Relationships Australia
SA, in which students can apply theory to real work situations and be involved in therapeutic activities with young people. All work placements require a current child-related employment screening from the Communities and Social Inclusion Department within the past 12 months. Future Youth Initiative manager Jo Zeitz says young people, parents and schools who have been connected to the service agree the support by case managers has made a difference in the young person’s life.

“We are excited to offer this unique student placement to people interested in becoming youth workers at our dynamic service, where we support young people to make life changes through our innovative programs,” she says.

“Our service offers young people a unique opportunity to look to the future with hope and acceptance. We work together with young people to navigate towards adult independence and positive wellbeing.”

Three-quarters of students who study at the AISR complete their training, well above the national average for related qualifications of 43 per cent. Trainers work closely with students to ensure their placements are completed successfully and go into the job market on the best foot
possible to find work fast.
